It was named after Severin of Cologne, a bishop from the 4th century. The 33-meter-high church stands away from the village on the highest elevation of Sylt's Geestkern. In pre-Christian times, a sanctuary dedicated to Freya was located here. The church was first mentioned in a document in 1240. Official investigations by monument preservation have shown that the construction of the church's roof truss can be dated to 1216.
