Motif and History:
Hadleigh Castle is a ruined castle on a ridge along the Thames south of the town of Hadleigh in the English county of Essex. The original painting of the same name by John Constable was completed in 1829 and can be viewed at the Yale Center for British Art. The artist first made a drawing after visiting the castle in 1814, and about 15 years later, the impressive painting was created.
